Hi Mike

Welcome to our weekly newsletter series.

This week Wayne tells us about his Poodle cross “Sumo”…….

“We have a crossed breed Poodle/Terrier and training him is
extremely important to us since we live in high rise apartment…..”

We also hear from Veronica who needs help with her Golden Retriever
puppy……

“I have two problems with my 16 week old Golden Retriever puppy.
He is adorable in so many ways and we all love him, but we had a 16
year old Golden who died in April, so going from that to a puppy is
fairly difficult to say the least……..”

Dog-Secrets – Reward training your dog

Hey Dog-Secrets,

Here’s Today’s Joke: Why do dogs wag their tails?
Because no one else will do it for them.

*********************************

Reward training your dog

Reward training is quite possibly one of the oldest methods of
training dogs, dating back to the days when people started trying
to domesticate wild animals.

It is probably the method of dog training that most of us are
familiar with, and it is a natural instinct to reward the dog when
they perform the task that we have asked of them.

Some people prefer to use a combination of the reward training
methods and the leash and collar training to get the best out of
their dog in the least time.

Some dogs respond better to reward training than leash and collar
training so your decision might depend on what method you see
working the best with your dog.

Reward training for dogs, has seen a remarkable increase in
popularity over recent years with many people finding this as their
preferred method of training their new puppies.

There is no definitive answer as to what the best type of dog
training is, as some dogs respond better to one technique than
others.

There are certainly some advanced techniques that are taught in the
top dog training manuals that will ensure you train your dog,
faster and easier than trying to do so on your own.

Most dogs will respond to some extent, to either method of
training, and any training is certainly better than none, even if
you only teach your dog the most basic commands.

Reward training is even used for dogs that work in the military and
police.

Those dogs that are used for scent detection and tracking are also
often trained using some form of reward training.

Generally, reward training is in the form of some type of food
reward.

How To Successfully Clicker Train Your Dog

Dogs are smart, but they don’t naturally know what you want them to do, just because you tell them to do something. They’re kind of like children, they just want what they want without regard to whether it is right and wrong. If you really want a well-trained dog, then you’ve got to train them to become your perfect canine companion. Simply telling them to do something isn’t sufficient. Commands and words sometimes may sometimes work, but if you truly want to see some amazing results then you should consider clicker training.

Potty Training Your Teacup Puppy

Now you have brought your Teacup Puppy home, it is time for Potty Training. Some food for thought, the sign to look for when your Teacup Puggle has to go is, it will start sniffing around the floor if it has to urinate to go and will start sniffing and usually start walking around in circles if it has to have a bowel movement. The more you pay attention to this behavior the shorter the training process will be. Take your teacup puggle outside immediately or to the newspaper if you are indoor training your puppy.

How To Train Your Puppy To Heel

What is heeling? Heeling is not the same as going for a walk. Heeling is an dog obedience exercise in which the dog stays close beside you, paying attention only to you and where you are going. As your puppy grows up, heeling will become the safe way for you to walk your dog through crowds and across streets, ignoring all normal or unusual distractions. It is the easiest lesson to begin with because you’ll be taking your new puppy outside on leash to eliminate and you can practice three times on each trip – on your way out, after he relieves himself, and coming back inside.

Dog Obedience Issues or Bored Dog?

Dogs, especially younger dogs, need something to do. If you don’t provide it, they’ll find it. Chewing shoes and digging in the garbage are fun when there’s nothing else to do. Everyone knows that! Often, taking your dog outside for a run or a rousing game of frisbee will burn up that excess energy and solve your dog obedience issues, but what if you can’t get outside? What if it’s too darn cold and icy out there? You don’t need to break a leg! For simple and enjoyable exercise inside the house, teach your dog to jump! I have a set of standards made from PVC pipe that can be taken apart for storage. But you don’t even need that.

Top 10 Successful Dog Training Tips

Obedience training is one of the best things you can do for your dog and yourself. Dog Obedience Training doesn’t solve all behavior problems, but it is the foundation for solving just about any problem including soiling your house, destroying your belongings, barking excessively, digging holes in your yard, fighting other dogs and even biting you. For most dog owners, dog obedience training is a daunting task. However, training your dog is about to get much easier, if you follow my advice below. Here Are My Top 10 Tips for Training Your Dog

Bite Inhibition and Appropriate Chewing

It is important initially to teach your puppy bite inhibition. This is basically training your puppy that it is advantageous for him to play-bite or mouth softly. All puppies have rather weak jaws but very sharp teeth and they use biting and mouthing as a way of playing with each other, with adult dogs and with humans. When a litter of puppies are playing together, there will often be a loud yelp and a halt to the play when one of the puppies bites a litter mate too hard. Once the puppy is living away from the litter, you must continue this instruction so he learns when he has bitten too hard for the games to continue.

Using the Alpha Male Principle With Your Dog

Do you have behaviour problems with your dog? Barking unnecessarily, aggression, destructive habits? This may be down to him not knowing his place – literally! All dogs, from the biggest wolfhound to the tiniest chihuahua, think they are wolves. This is genetic and hard-wired into their brains.
